Fly East and Start With Nilaveli Beach

Getting to the east coast is easier than you think. There are domestic flights in Sri Lanka connecting Colombo to Trincomalee in under an hour, saving you a long road journey and giving you more beach time. You can book your hops with Cinnamon Air to connect the coasts. Once you land, head straight to Nilaveli — its long, uncrowded stretch of white sand and shallow turquoise water is pure paradise. Grab a sunbed, order a fresh lime juice, and let the jet lag melt away.

Swim With Giants at Pigeon Island

Just off Nilaveli lies Pigeon Island National Park, home to some of the best snorkelling on the island. Coral gardens, blacktip reef sharks, and sea turtles are regular visitors. Join a morning boat trip from the beach — the water is clearest before noon.

Glide Through Batticaloa’s Lagoons

After Trincomalee, drift south to Batticaloa, where life revolves around three shimmering lagoons. A boat ride in Batticaloa feels like floating through a nature documentary — water lilies, egrets, and singing fish (yes, really — the lagoon is famous for its musical fish, best “heard” on moonlit nights). Ask around for a local boatman; the stories they share are half the experience.

Explore Forts, Temples, and Fresh Crab Curry

Don't miss Batticaloa Fort, built by the Portuguese and later held by the Dutch, with a lighthouse offering sweeping lagoon views. Back in Trincomalee, climb up to the Koneswaram Temple perched dramatically on Swami Rock. And wherever you are, eat lagoon crab curry, kottu roti from roadside stalls, and grilled fish caught that same morning.
